Born on 5th March 1938, Murray Naylor joined the Scots Guards in September 1956 to undertake National Service. He was commissioned July 1957 and later transferred to a regular commission.
He served in Germany, Oman, Kenya, Northern Ireland and the UK in a variety of regimental and staff appointments. Attended the Indian Defence Services Staff College at Wellington, Tamil Nadu in 1970. Commanded 2nd Battalion Scots Guards in Germany and Northern Ireland 1976-1979, 22nd Armoured Brigade in Germany 1982-1983 and 2nd Infantry Division in York 1987-1989. His final appointment was as Director General Territorial Army and Organisation in the Ministry of Defence 1989-1992, when he retired.
Murray Naylor attended the Royal College of Defence Studies, London in 1984.
Since leaving the Army he has settled in North Yorkshire. He was Chairman of the North Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust 1992-1997; a governor of St Peter’s School York 1991-2005 (Chairman 2000-2005); a North Yorkshire County Councillor 1997-2005, with involvement in a number of other local activities.
He is married with three sons all seemingly gainfully employed and has five grandchildren.
Murray Naylor became Chairman of the Trust on its formation in 2003.
