Nick Pinfield’s Royal Navy service 1964-67 was in the Indian Ocean, the Atlantic and the Gulf. His later history degree had special emphasis on the Indian subcontinent, especially the period 1750-1947.
After a few years in Tanzania with the British Council, Nick returned to the UK and trained to become a teacher of history. Longman published his GCSE textbook The Indian Subcontinent in 1988. After a decade of teaching he became a scientific publisher with Butterworth Scientific, Springer-Verlag, Academic Press and Elsevier, retiring in 2005.
Nick Pinfield’s father served in the Royal India Navy 1941-45 and was for a time posted to Burma as a liaison officer. His mother lived as a girl in Calcutta and Bombay.
Nick married Rosemary in 1973 and they have three children – Alexander a diplomat currently in Tehran; Rebecca a radio production manager in London, and Eleanor a corporate governance manager at the Tate. His wife Rosemary works as a health visitor in Goring, Sussex.
They live near Oxford, where Nick has recently become a Magistrate. Nick is also a Trustee of Age Concern, Chalgrove, Oxfordshire.
