Trustees of the
KOHIMA Educational Trust
Major Hugh G Young
Hugh Young was born in India in 1944 where his father was serving with the 10th Baluch Regiment of the Indian Army during WWII.
He returned to Scotland in 1946 and was educated at the Fort Augustus Abbey School and the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. He was commissioned into The Queen’s Own Highlanders in 1965 and served with them until they amalgamated with The Gordon Highlanders to become The Highlanders in 1994.
On retirement from the Army in 1999 Hugh Young took a Retired Officer’s post at Headquarters 2nd Division in Edinburgh, just after the Headquarters moved from Imphal Barracks in York. Whilst in this post he organised the reunions in York of veterans of the Battle of Kohima, including the last one on the 60th anniversary of the battle which was attended by HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
From his association with the veterans sprung an interest in Kohima. He has since visited Kohima on two occasions and on retirement from full time employment in 2007 he became a trustee of the Kohima Educational Trust.
Hugh Young designed and edited the Trust Brochure and the Kohima Battlefield Guide and has been the Trust’s Treasurer. He lives in Edinburgh with his wife and two dogs.
